People in organizations must connect on a human level before meaningful communication and collaboration occur. Like networked computers, humans need a connection to function effectively. As leaders, it's our responsibility to ensure these connections are made and maintained.

While employees often find creative ways to get things done despite weak connections, imagine how much more could be accomplished if we prioritized connecting people. This isn’t superficial networking but real, meaningful connections that foster communication and collaboration.

True connection happens when both parties feel understood, respected, and appreciated. When people genuinely like and respect each other, they collaborate better, leading to innovative ideas and reduced stress. When human connections are nurtured, work becomes more enjoyable and productive.

As leaders, we need to connect people around meaningful goals explicitly. While open workspaces and staff outings may be helpful, the key is fostering connections around work. When people are genuinely connected, how and where they work becomes secondary.

Connecting people isn’t sentimental; it’s directly tied to business success. External challenges arise if internal connections are weak and customers feel the effects.

To effectively connect for communication and collaboration, here’s a checklist:

  1. The leader prioritizes connecting people.

  2. The leader is well-connected with peers and higher-ups.

  3. Teams are small (6-8 members) with clear goals, values, and behaviors.

  4. The leader appreciates each member’s talents and supports their development.

  5. Regular meetings are the platform for connection.

  6. The leader carefully prepares meetings and attendees.

  7. The leader facilitates, ensuring team cohesion and focus.

  8. A written report documents decisions and holds members accountable.

  9. The quality of each meeting is assessed and discussed.

  10. Each meeting brings the team closer to their goals.

In short, establishing genuine connections around business goals is critical for leadership. Once achieved, it makes leadership much easier and more effective.
